Belgium Visa Guidelines
U.S. citizens studying abroad in Belgium may need to obtain a visa depending on the length of their program. It is your responsibility to confirm requirements, prepare the necessary documents, and apply for the correct visa through the Belgian Embassy or Consulate.

What Type of Visa Do I Need?
- Less than 90 days: U.S. citizens do not need a visa to study in Belgium for stays up to 90 days within the Schengen Area.
- More than 90 days: Students must apply for a National Visa (Type D) for study purposes. This visa is required for semester- or year-long programs.
When Should I Apply?
- You may submit your application no earlier than 6 months before the start of your program.
- You must apply at least 3 weeks before departure. However, it is strongly recommended that you apply 8–12 weeks in advance to allow time for processing and gathering required documents.
- Processing times vary but generally take several weeks to a few months depending on the complexity of your application.
