Visa Guidelines – Hong Kong

The guidelines below apply to students studying in Hong Kong for a period of a semester up to one academic year. Please contact Education Abroad or your host university contact if you have any questions.

Is a Visa Required for US Citizens?
Yes. US passport holders must apply for a visa to stay in the HKSAR for more than 90 days. If you are not a US passport holder, click here to check visa requirements by nationality.

Cost: $230

Important Notes
The visa application is a two-part process requiring documentation from both the student and the host institution in Hong Kong. The host institution will provide the ID995B form and specific instructions. Students must complete the Application for Entry for Study in Hong Kong (ID995A form) and submit all required documentation.
Applications may be submitted: Because requirements vary by institution, students should follow the instructions provided by their host institution.
Before applying, students should review the Guidebook for Entry for Study in Hong Kong and ensure they have completed the ID995A form.

Required Documents

  • Valid US passport + one photocopy of information page
  • Completed ID995A form
  • One recent passport-sized photo
  • Official acceptance letter from host institution
  • Proof of financial support (e.g., bank statement and guarantor letter)

Application Process

  1. Complete the ID995A form and assemble all required documents.
