Visa Guidelines - Vietnam
The guidelines below apply to students studying in Vietnam for a period of over 90 days or for one semester up to one academic year. Please contact Education Abroad if you have any questions.
Is a Visa Required for US Citizens?
- Yes! US Passport Holders are required to apply for a “DH” Student Visa to stay in Vietnam for more than 90 days.
- If you are not a US passport holder, you can click here to see if you need a visa to enter Vietnam based on your nationality.
- Regular Student Visa Cost: $150
- Processing time for Student Regular Visa is 3 to 5 business days
The Consulate of Vietnam has strict requirements for accepting visa applications. Follow the instructions on the Visa webpage, and print out the complete visa application form.
List of requirements
- Original, signed passport valid for 6 months beyond stay in Vietnam + 1 blank page available for the Vietnam visa
- Vietnam Visa Application Form (2 copies)
- Two (2) recent 2 x 2 passport type photographs, in color
- Official Acceptance Letter from sponsoring Host university
- Letter of Approval,, obtained through the applicant’s host or sponsor in Vietnam. The host or sponsor in Vietnam must contact the Immigration Department, Ministry of Public Security or the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam
- US Postal Service Priority Mail Envelope: Pre-paid and addressed to your home address

- Applicants complete the on-line application form for the DH Student Visa
- Print out the application form, and assemble your visa application, which must include:
- Original, signed passport valid for 6 months beyond stay in Vietnam + 1 blank page available for the Vietnam visa
- Vietnam Visa Application Form (2 copies)
- Two (2) recent 2 x 2 passport type photographs, in color
- Official Acceptance Letter from sponsoring Host university
- Letter of Approval , obtained through the applicant’s host or sponsor in Vietnam.
- ONLY if you request the visa to returned by mail: Prepaid US Postal Service Priority Mail Envelope or FedEx envelope, addressed to your home address
- Schedule an appointment
- The Embassy of Vietnam will prepare your visa in 3 to 5 business days, and you can either return to the Embassy to retrieve it, or the Embassy will mail it back to you
