Maryland-in-Perugia Academic Overview

This overview provides information about the academics of the Maryland-in-Perugia program.

Academic Structure

Maryland-in-Perugia semester students will enroll in 12-17 credits, depending on their program of study:

  • General Studies Program
  • Food & Sustainability Studies Program
    • Course focuses on developing a deeper understanding of global food systems, sustainability, and the environment. Students will take the FSE program's 1-credit core course, along with at least three FSE electives (for a total of 10 credits). This is in addition to the required Italian language course (4 credits). Students can also take an additional course from Umbra's offerings.
    • Students who complete this track receive a certificate of completion from the Umbra Institute.
    • As this some of the courses in this track are transfer credit, we will need to obtain a Roger Williams University transcript for your courses, which is an additional $500 charge.
  • Intensive Italian
    • Students on the Intensive Italian track have the option to directly enroll in either the Universita’ per Stranieri (University for Foreigners) or the Universita’ degli Studi di Perugia (University of Perugia).

All semester students are required to take an Italian language course. No prior experience taking Italian language classes is required. Please note that UMD credit will only be granted for language courses taken above the level of Italian already received at UMD.

In addition to different academic tracks, different programs may also have different program costs due to engagement opportunities and academic needs. Please refer to the costs tab and Umbra’s website for further information. Students should disclose prior to completing their Study Abroad Course Approval Form if they intend to enroll in a track besides the General Studies Program.

Credit and Transcripts

Maryland-in-Perugia is a hybrid credit program offering both resident and transfer credit courses. Courses taken at the Umbra Institute are offered as resident credit (excluding select courses on the FSE track) while courses taken at the Universita’ per Stranieri (University for Foreigners) or the Universita’ degli Studi di Perugia (University of Perugia) are offered as transfer credit.

If you take any courses that are listed in the course database as transfer credit (TC), any courses not listed on the database, or any courses that have a note stating so, we will need to obtain a Roger Williams University transcript for your courses, and this will be an additional $500 charge. This applies to many of the courses that fall under the FSE track.

Course Evaluations

Because Maryland-in-Perugia students enroll in courses at the Umbra Institute, availability of courses changes every semester and UMD Education Abroad cannot guarantee there will be enough space in every course requested. Courses may also be cancelled before the start of the semester. Students should refer to the Umbra Institute website to see which courses are being offered for their chosen semester.

Students who choose to take courses at the Umbra Institute that are not approved by the University of Maryland may not receive academic credit for them. Students who drop a course after the Umbra Institute’s Add/Drop period will receive a W on their Maryland transcript for that course.

Please note that grades from the term in Perugia are not posted until at least 4-6 weeks after the end of the semester in which a student studies abroad.
