Program Description:

Global Immersion Experience

This program is intended to provide a general understanding of doing business in the United Arab Emirates, including comparative business practices and culture in a world region of great significance to global commerce. In the course, you will explore topics of culture, history, government, economic development and social development. You will also examine themes of business and politics of the UAE, the challenges of doing business in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the political economic restructuring of the state, and the impact of government policies on businesses in the UAE.

This program will take place in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emerites.

Dubai is frequently listed as the fastest growing city in the world, and it has become a major financial center, a premier trading center of the Arabian Gulf and a popular tourist destination. A rising economic power, Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, is poised to become a major new economic superpower that will soon wield enormous influence across both developing and developed worlds. Abu Dhabi is the richest city in the world.

You will be housed in shared accommodations in hotels in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

You must be in good academic and judicial standing. Please refer to the Fact Sheet at the top of this page for specific eligibility requirements.

Primary preference will be given to students in the College Park Scholars Business, Society and the Economy (BSE) program, and secondarily to graduating seniors.

After you commit to the program, Education Abroad will enroll you in one of the following three (3) credit UMD courses:
  • CPSP379B: Advanced Practicum: Study Abroad: Dubai: Global Immersion Experience
  • HONR349V: Honors Colloquium: Dubai: Global Immersion Experience
Prior to departure students will be expected to participate in meetings.

Dr. Mark Wellman, a Distinguished Tyser Teaching Fellow, is a faculty member in the Department of Management and Organization at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business and he serves as director of the College Park Scholars Business, Society and Economy (BSE) program. Dr. Wellman is recognized for his innovative courses and his memorable, relevant experiences outside of the classroom. He is the recipient of many honors, including the prestigious University of Maryland Brit Kirwan Award and the Outstanding Faculty Educator Award.
