What is a visa?
A visa is a legal document from immigration authorities which shows you have permission to enter the country for a certain amount of time. While U.S. citizens will not need a visa to enter Canada, nationals of other countries may be required to apply for a visa or an electronic travel authorization.
What is a study permit?
Canada requires most foreign nationals who will be studying abroad in Canada for more than 6 months to apply for a study permit. This is a document issued by the Canadian government that allows you to study within the country at a designated learning institution (DLI). United States citizens do not need to apply for an electronic travel authorization (ETA) or visa in order to enter Canada. If staying in Canada for more than 6 months, US citizens (and most other nationals) are required to apply for a study permit.
The study permit is not required for students who will be studying in Canada for 6 months or less, though it is recommended. For students staying 6 months or less who do not need a study permit, an electronic travel authorization (ETA, for students from visa-exempt countries) or visitor visa will likely be required.
