Immerse yourself in the complex global education and social issues facing the world today by participating in Embargoed Exchanges: International Investigations in Cuban Education. In this program, you will travel to Camaguey to engage in international fieldwork and conduct international research related to your academic interests.. This conference style program allows you to engage with local Cuban educators through scholarly lectures and panels, collaborative exchanges, workshops, informal interviews, and site visits to education and cultural sites.
You must be in good academic and judicial standing and you must not have any registration blocks to participate in this program. The minimum GPA for this program is listed above.
Non-UMD and UMD graduate students are eligible to apply.
Knowledge of Spanish is not required but preferred.
This program is ideal for graduate students who wish to conduct research in a complex international setting. Students from all majors within the College of Education will be given preference but the program is open to all majors.. Anthropology, Latin American Studies, and Public Policy are encouraged to consider this program. You must be open to engaging with the complex issues involving global education policy.
After you commit to the program, Education Abroad will enroll you in the following three (3) credit UMD course:
The credit you earn during this program will count as resident credit.
After admission to the program, you will meet with the faculty director to discuss course requirements and the research component of the course. This program also includes four pre-trip sessions (2/2/23, 2/17/23, 3/3/23, 3/17/23). In addition there will be an online course space to facilitate pre-departure discussions and virtual exchanges with our Cuban colleagues to provide context for the course content prior to our arrival.
The course will meet once upon return to the US on 4/1/23.
You will stay in shared accommodations in a modest hotel located centrally in Camaguey. Internet access is limited in Cuba. Students should plan to be disconnected from their home communities and use the time in Cuba to engage with the local community in Camaguey.
*This program qualifies for eligible Pell Grant recipients to apply for the Gilman International Scholarship. Online applications will open in mid-August and are due October 5, 2023, at 11:59pm PT.

Dr. Taylor C. Woodman is an Assistant Clinical Professor of International Education Policy in the College of Education. Taylor is a critical internationalization scholar that uses his research, teaching, and practice to challenge dominant assumptions of international education exchange. His teaching and research focus on various areas that include global learning, academic diplomacy, internationalization of higher education, digital internationalization, qualitative methodology, and Cuban education. He has taught at the undergraduate and graduate level for the last decade at DC area schools. Taylor is no stranger to study abroad. He studied abroad in South Africa, Senegal, Brazil, Argentina and Cuba and led his own study abroad courses in Spain, The Netherlands, Ghana, Dominican Republic and Cuba. He is excited to connect educators across borders to share in best international practices of education research.
